
Getting Your Heat Right in Screen Printing
The trick to great screen printing is all about the heat. You need it to be intense enough to flash-dry the ink fast, but not so hot that you scorch the fabric or melt your plastic parts. To nail that balance, we use halogen-filled quartz lamps. They blast out short-wave infrared radiation that hits the ink surface immediately. It means your garments spend way less time under the heater, which keeps everything moving. Talking Power and Voltage Depending on how fast your conveyor is humming along, you’ll probably want these lamps between 1kW and 3kW. More wattage equals more heat, which lets you crank up the line speed. We usually build these for 230V or 400V. If you go with 400V, you’re pulling less current for the same amount of power. The upside? You can use thinner wiring in your control cabinet. But here’s a warning: if you cram too much wattage into a short tube, the heat density gets wild. Keep your reflectors polished and spotless. If they get dirty, the heat bounces back into the housing and fries your sockets. Not a fun way to spend a Tuesday. The Nitty-Gritty: Quartz and Clips Inside that high-purity quartz tube is a tungsten filament. We add halogen gas to the mix, which basically pushes evaporated tungsten back onto the filament. It stops the wire from thinning out, so the lamp actually lasts. For the electrical side, we stick with R7s or SK15 spring-loaded connectors. They grip the lamp tight. You don’t want things vibrating loose while the conveyor is shaking the whole setup. A Few Things to Keep in Mind These lamps are pretty easy to swap into most industrial flash dryers, and they hit full temp almost the second you flip the switch. Just be careful. Because they get so hot, the quartz is fragile. If you leave a fingerprint or a smudge of oil on the glass, it creates a “hot spot.” That’s a one-way ticket to a cracked tube during your first heat cycle. Do yourself a favor: grab some isopropyl alcohol and give the glass a good wipe before you wire it up. Your future self will thank you.
