
Shortwave or Mediumwave? Picking the right quartz lamp for your textiles
If you’re trying to figure out which IR lamp to use for drying fabric, it really comes down to two things: how thick your material is and how much water is trapped inside. We use high-purity quartz glass for both options. Why? Because these things go through a lot of thermal shock when you flip them on and off, and cheap glass just won’t cut it.
How the heat actually hits the fabric
Shortwave lamps are like a punch to the face. They run incredibly hot and blast a massive amount of energy right onto the surface. It’s instant. If you’re flash-drying a thin synthetic blend or a surface coating, this is your best bet. Mediumwave is a different story. Instead of hitting the surface, these wavelengths actually “sync up” with water and organic fibers. This lets the heat soak deep into the core of the fabric. It’s a lifesaver for heavy cottons or wools. You won’t end up with that nightmare scenario where the outside of the fabric is scorched but the center is still damp.
A word on the gear
We build these tubes from fused quartz because it can take the heat and doesn’t freak out when it hits the chemical fumes common in dyeing plants. Just a heads-up: shortwave lamps get so hot they glow white. That puts a ton of pressure on the seals. Do yourself a favor and check your mounting brackets. Make sure there’s enough room for the metal to expand, otherwise, the tubes might snap during a cold start. Not a fun way to start a Monday.
The trade-offs
Shortwave is great if you’re tight on space. It ramps up fast, which means you can actually shorten your conveyor line and save some floor space. But be careful—if you don’t get the distance exactly right, you risk melting your synthetics. Mediumwave is a bit more forgiving. It won’t melt your fabric as easily, but you’ll need to leave the material under the lamp longer to get all the moisture out. It really just depends on what’s on your table. Drying heavy denim? Go mediumwave. Need fast-cure prints on polyester? Shortwave is the way to go.
